The Goldbergs — The Ugly Jacket

 

Beverly decides that she wants to pursue her dream of being an entrepreneur and sell her own stylish jackets on QVC. She eagerly whips together several jackets and repeatedly tries to contact QVC, but she is never able to reach them. Beverly’s husband agrees to sell the jackets to the customers at his local furniture store, but he finds that this task is harder than he imagined it would be.

After selling a couch, Murray offers the customer a special half-off price on the jacket. The customer refuses, so Murray continues to lower the price until he gets to the point of offering to give the couch away if he takes the jacket, but, the costumer still refuses this offer. Will Murray is willing and able to sell the jacket, he can’t find suitable buyers who are willing to enter the market. Despite Say’s Law that supply will create demand, he is unable to find customers at even a zero price.

Tim decides to customize his lawn mower in order to get more power out of it. By doing so he’s able to mow his lawn much quicker than he previous did. This technological innovation allows him to complete his task much quicker and spend more time on other tasks that need to be completed around the house.

Home Improvement — Asymmetric Information

Tim decides to hide a blow torch from his co-host, Al, in order to teach a lesson to his young children watching at home. Unfortunately, Al doesn’t know that the blow torch has been hidden and he believes he has lost the item on live television. Asymmetric information occurs when one party has more information than the other party in a transaction. When one party has more information, they are better able to make decisions and make take advantage of the unknowing party.

ABC 20/20 — A Test on Looks

 

A 20/20 investigation into how we subtly discriminate based on looks when it comes to donating to charity. About 1/5 people in total donated money, but requesters who were rated as better looking raised more money than the other requesters. Better looking women were able to raise twice as much money as their counterparts.

Blackish: Gift Giving

The Johnson’s Christmas has changed a bit, but it looks like the children still don’t appreciate the gifts they were given. Junior perfectly demonstrates the inefficiency of gift giving by noting that his parents took money he could use anywhere and turned it into money he could only use at one store.

Life Cycle Considerations in Modern Family

One of the tougher topics to get across to students is why older workers leave the labor force. One explanation for the leave is that they see a decrease in their human capital and that some of their previous training is no longer relevant. This clip does a good job bringing humor to a topic that often sounds derogatory.
