Brooklyn 99 — Wine Drink as a Gift

 

The squad is invited over to the Captain’s house for a birthday party,  and they all have the same idea when it comes to wine. While Jake wants to try to impress the captain with the finest bottle of wine, he’s a little out of the price range and settles for an $8 bottle of wine. Come to find out, the entire squad buys the same bottle of “wine drink” and Kevin isn’t too fond of their selection.

While it isn’t clear that there is much of a difference between cheap and expensive wine, “wine drink” probably doesn’t send the best signal of quality.

John Mulaney — An XXL Shirt

 

 

John receives an XXL shirt as a child, which was pretty useless to him. His mom suggests that he use it as a sleep shirt, but he really wants to make a comment to the person who gave him the gift. His mom explains that it’s rude to make comments about people who give your gifts, but John is quick to notice that the inefficiencies of receiving gifts that aren’t really usable.

Life in Pieces — Coupons as gifts

Matt isn’t the best at giving gifts and he’s realizing that this year. Matt gives his wife a homemade coupon book that she decides to finally cash in to show him how awful the gifts are. After a while he doesn’t work as hard, but then at family dinner he finds out that no one really appreciates his gifts because it doesn’t seem like he puts much thought into them. There is a small line about positive externalities because Jen got a flu shot for her birthday once, which her husbands announces was “the gift that keeps on giving.”

One of the tough parts of buying Christmas gifts is that we don’t have perfect information regarding what the other person really wants. This issue often leads to us buying gifts for people based on what we think they’d like. This commercial from eBay points out that you can find a variety of gifts that someone would put on their list are low prices if you shop on eBay.

Jim Gaffigan — Birthdays

Jim Gaffigan discusses the irrationality of gift giving in this stand up special. People continue to give clothing as gifts even though the received doesn’t like the item. Gaffigan makes a good point that he would rather throw away the gift than return it because then returning it creates an errand for him.

Old School — The Gift Frank Keeps Giving

Frank (Will Ferrell) tries to re-gift a bread make his friend Mitch (Luke Wilson), but it turns out that Mitch was actually the one to originally give the gift to Frank. Embarrassed, he accepts the gift back, but later tries to give the gift again during a child’s birthday party. One of the issues with gift giving is that most givers don’t know how the recipient values the item. In this case, Frank is stuck with a bread maker that he can’t seem to give away.

Blackish: Gift Giving

The Johnson’s Christmas has changed a bit, but it looks like the children still don’t appreciate the gifts they were given. Junior perfectly demonstrates the inefficiency of gift giving by noting that his parents took money he could use anywhere and turned it into money he could only use at one store.
